I started here as a Project Administrator in 2018 and now, I’m a project manager. Before becoming a Project Manager, I was a Project Coordinator for a few years; after about 4 years I started taking on smaller projects and I was made Project Manager in 2023. I have since managed several Biomethane projects, over a wide range of networks, such as; Cadent, SGN, WWU, etc. However recently, I wanted to push myself out my comfort zone and I’m now managing Banbury, which is a £multi-million project focusing on Biomethane injection; a first of its kind!
The project manager job runs from the start of the project to its completion. It involves everything, from helping the sales team with any questions, interpreting feedback from past projects to understand how that can inform future projects, working with engineers so that the designs are on time and to procedures. As well as ensuring that the client has what they need, delivering the project on time, on cost and as per the scope. It includes the construction of our solutions in our Manufacturing Technology Centre, to the commissioning of that solution and products on site.
It’s also about making sure everyone is happy along the way. I’ve become more and more conscious, as I’ve gone on, that making sure the team is happy helps us be more productive, rather than just pushing for dates and times. You want people to enjoy what they’re doing and that naturally then makes us more productive. The last project has been challenging and there have been times that it’s been stressful, but we don’t want people feeling swamped. I hope because I have experience working in the whole range of project roles, including document control and administration, this has helped me see each job from different perspectives, and I treat people how I wanted to be treated.
Even before I started here, I liked being organised, planning an idea and seeing it come to life. When I used to go on holidays with friends, I was always the organiser. When I started here, I remember saying in my first week, I wanted to be a project manager and so they gave me those opportunities and threw me in the deep end a little bit, trusting me to use my initiative. That’s what I enjoy. Sometimes I like it when things get challenging because I like trying to solve it. We do of course have challenges that I can’t solve on my own and we’re often solving things together; everyone steps in to help and that’s what I like about this company.
There’s a lot of passion and commitment in this business. People care and they stay here for a long time, to strive and achieve more.
I go to a lot of music festivals and gigs with my Fiance; there was one year we saw over 52 different artists, some house festivals, a lot of indie music, all sorts. Some are established bands, some have up and coming bands, local artists and some big names. A real mix. We love travelling and we’ve been to a few places; my favourite’s probably Mexico, where I got engaged. Before I started at this business I travelled around India, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia for 3 months, and yes, I did buy the baggy hippy pants…3. Would you recommend Bilfinger nZero to someone else?
I also like sport, when I was in high school, I was a British Weightlifting Champion, and a keen Boxer. Something that I carried through to university where I boxed for Liverpool John Moores. I studied Fine Art for my degree and even then, I think I was a project manager in waiting! My art pieces were in response to a brief, using materials and planning how I would go about creating a final piece; that skill set is something I use here all the time.
Yes. I’ve recently completed the Bilfinger Talent programme, with people from across the world, we worked on case studies, learning how to work with different people. All I see is opportunities and a future here, so I would definitely recommend working here to anyone interested.
Values generally are good for business. For me, Ambition and Team Spirit tie in with my personal values and that really helps. I am all about making sure everyone enjoys working on my projects and feel that they are working well. Ambition, for me as a Value reminds me that I want to continue develop my experience and see what opportunities open up for me. I joined a smaller business back in 2018 and to see where Bilfinger nZero has got to, through growing and growing; it’s been exciting to be see that change and progression and has been great to be a part of that achievement.
I’d like to continue to develop my project manager role and do more complex projects, take on more responsibilities, and see what opportunities there are in Bilfinger and where that can take me.
